Year 9 & 10

The Years 9 and 10 program at Mount Rowan Secondary College supports students to deepen their learning, explore interests and make informed decisions about future pathways. Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, these years mark an important transition from a broad core program to increased choice, specialisation and independence.

Students are guided through a structured subject selection process that helps them identify strengths, interests and possible post-school pathways. This is done primarily in our Year 9 Explore program. This prepares students for senior secondary options, including VCE and VCE Vocational Major.

Learning Focus

Across Years 9 and 10, students:

  • Build greater independence and responsibility for learning
  • Strengthen literacy and numeracy through core subjects
  • Explore a wide range of elective subjects

Develop skills and knowledge aligned to future study, training or employment pathways

Core and Elective Studies

All students continue to study core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Health and Physical Education. Alongside this, students choose from an expanding range of elective subjects across areas including the Arts, Technologies, Languages and Applied Learning.

The increased elective choice allows students to:

  • Explore personal interests and talents
  • Begin to specialise in areas of strength
  • Experience learning linked to real-world applications
  • Make informed decisions about senior secondary pathways

Pathways and Preparation for Senior School

Throughout Years 9 and 10, students are supported to develop a clear understanding of pathway options. Careers education, subject counselling and individual guidance help students select subjects that align with their aspirations and prepare them for success in senior school and beyond.

The Years 9 and 10 program empowers students to take ownership of their learning while building the confidence, skills and clarity needed for future pathways.
